Wanted:  Sharers for Community Supported Agriculture

Interest in our Community Supported Agriculture program, after flagging for several years, has begun slowly to pick up during the past two seasons.

In 2003, we added six paid sharers, counting as single sharers three people who used up their shares during the season and renewed within the year, and we picked up seven work sharers, several of them helping at Thanksgiving to pack and label Turkeys.

Community Supported Agriculture is a way for farmers and the people who eat food to work together either literally or through an exchange of trust.

In brief, through CSA a customer pays for her food ahead of time either with a check or by working for the farm.

For you, the sharer, there is the satisfaction of participating in a local farm.  There is the knowledge that you’ll get the best food available, and that, by expressing your ideas, you can influence what the farm does and how.  And, you get Turkey below retail prices because we pay interest on the shares.

For us, the farm gets some working capital during the season, and it gets the comfort of local support and the knowledge that we have outlets ensured for some of our output.

While interest in work shares is growing, more CSA sharers take out paid shares.  These begin at $100 and rise in in increments of $50.  The interest rises with each increment, as well.  We pay 6 per cent interest on a $100 share, 8 percent on $150, 10 percent on $200, and so on.  The largest current share is $400, at 18 percent.

As a work sharer, you can earn a $150 share for two days of work for the farm.  The work usually consists of helping us process meat – some sharers work on the slaughter line but most work in packaging – or clear land or build items for the farm or fix fences or whatever else we might need on the days sharers are available.

The farm workday is 8 hours.  Some choose the 10-hour shift that is a day at the Fryeburg Fair, and that work is food preparation, food service and cleanup.

Sharers may pick up Turkey at our farmstore and at the Brunswick and Farmington farmers’ markets.  Or, they may place orders and meet our truck during our regular delivery trips.  We deliver east of the Kennebec River on the second Thursday of the month, west of the Kennebec on the third Thursday.  Special deliveries are possible, too.
